December Dawn

She gave me a sideways smile

I held her hand for a while

In the 5:00 a.m. booth

At the Diner

It was as simple as that

She laughed and she put on my hat

The night I met her

Man, she was shining

When I’m old and gray

And my mind wanders

She’ll be there with me

In that December dawn

She rubbed the chain around her neck

The waiter laid down the check

She slid by & I walked out

Behind her

The air was cold, the sky was clear

We stood and talked of the coming year

& all I wanted was to stay

Right beside her

Now I’m old and gray

And my mind wanders

To where she’s there with me

In that December dawn

I gave her a sideways smile

She held my hand for a while

In the 5:00 a.m. booth

At the Diner
